The Cold War and Stuff

The Cold War and Stuff, a history class taught at Willamette Valley Community School during Spring Term 2005 by John M. Burt. Topics covered include the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, Reaganism, the New World Order and the New American Century, but above all on the fears and expectations of the people living through history.

Paul DeCola, one of 2,996

The history class "The Cold War and Stuff" is long since over with. So, for that matter, is the Willamette Valley Community School. But since this blog still exists, I might as well post here a duplicate of today's post at my regular blog, http://john_m_burt.blogspot.com , part of the 2,996 Project:

In memory of Paul DeCola, age 39, of Ridgewood, N.Y., who died five years ago today at the World Trade Center.

On that day, my only comment was, "Innocents have suffered today. As a result, more innocents will suffer."

After five years, I have nothing more to add.

We watched the rest of M*A*S*H, and some of the supplemental material on the DVD, which helped to place the film in historical context -- both the history of the Korean War and also the historical period, late Vietnam War, when the film was made.

Health class was not advanced substantially, so we'll have to catch up on that one.

We watched the first part of M*A*S*H, and made some effort to put the film in perspective historically.

A long session in health class, discussing methods of birth control and prophylaxis, covering the various methods and how they work. Emphasis especially on how some forms of birth control are also prophylactic, and some are not, and how some forms of prohylaxis do not serve as birth control.

History time was a bit short, but we did get in some discussion of the order of historical events. The students are still rather shaky on which President came before which.

I helped the students construct a timeline of postwar history: who was President when, major events of a given block of years, &c. They needed a lot of help, but I'm looking forward to being able to set them to making their own timeline, without my "assistance". But it may take awhile.

I took the students to the Public Library to look at various online resources. They read several different timelines of events, and were assigned to post at least one substantial comment at the Yahoo group about an item on a timeline (the raising of the Berlin Wall, the Soviet space prgram, &c.).
